We left the cities by the sea-- Seattle and Vancouver, with their harbors, sea breezes and fresh salty aroma's and boarded an Amtrak Super-liner bound for Chicago. Ok, we didn't have tickets all the way to Chicago, but it was tempting to stay on, nonetheless. We hugged the Puget Sound for the hour or so as we chugged up the coast toward Everett. From there, we made our way inland up Steven's Pass along wild, lush green river valleys into the Cascade Highlands. It provided a marked contrast, as we emerged from the deep green growth of the Cascades, into the barren Columbia Basin with its wide open expanse and sparse vegetation. Even with a wet Spring the sagebrush-studded bluffs seemed particularly yellow and brown. We made our way down to Wenatchee and then followed the Columbia River Gorge for another hour or so until darkness made its slow midsummer descent upon us. The ride became a bit more monotonous after the dark came, and the last 2 and 1/2 hours of our 8 hour train ride would have given us pause had we been continuing on all the way to Chicago.
